Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (HLHS) is a congenital heart defect that is uniformly fatal when untreated. It is the leading cause of death among the nearly one in every 100 babies born with congenital heart disease.
My research team is making tremendous strides in HLHS research by studying the ETS1 gene (the Jacobsen syndrome “heart gene”) in order to gain new insights into how this gene causes congenital heart defects. I am particularly excited about the new genetic pathways we are discovering that are regulated by ETS1. Our most recent studies have identified a specific group of cells that have a critical role in the development of the ventricle, such that loss of that function can lead to HLHS. Our studies are focused on identifying the underlying genetic pathways that are regulated by ETS1, and already are giving us exciting new insights into how we can improve outcomes of patients with HLHS.
Philanthropy plays a vital role in advancing this this lifesaving research that I am so passionate about. Please consider making a donation to further our efforts. Every dollar helps. As always, 100% of your donation goes directly to support my research.
I am eternally grateful for your support. Thank you.
Warmest Regards,
Paul Grossfeld, MD
