The Autism Friendly Health System Initiative (AFHSI) was inspired by the needs of patients, families, and staff.

The inherent tendencies of an autism diagnosis can make access to routine healthcare more challenging. Children and teens with autism have more complex medical needs and utilize the Emergency Department at higher rates than their typically developing peers. Despite higher healthcare utilization rates, autistic patients experience poorer outcomes and report less satisfaction with their healthcare experiences. Medical staff also report a lack of training and comfort in caring for autistic patients.

At Rady Children’s Hospital, the AFHSI has implemented a variety of interventions.

The Autism Friendly Questionnaire (AFQ) is used to gather information and customize the visit. Behavior Specialists train staff and clinicians on proactive and reactive strategies.

Autism tool kits are used to adapt the environment and promote coping skills. The AFHSI utilizes a program evaluation framework to assess the acceptability and adoptability of our interventions in real-time.
